Kangra Valley, Himachal Pradesh-  Kangra valley is one of the most pleasant, relaxing and spiritual places in the Himalayas. Dharamshala is the headquarters of the Kangra District in the Indian state of Himachal Pradesh. Kangra district came into existence on the 1st September, 1972 consequent upon the re-organisation of districts by the Government of Himachal Pradesh. Kangra was the largest district of the composite Punjab in terms of area till it was transferred to Himachal Pradesh on the 1st  November, 1966. On the re-organisation of composite Punjab on the 1st   November, 1966 the area constituting Kangra district were transferred to Himachal Pradesh along with the districts of Shimla,   Kullu and Lahul & Spiti and tehsils of Una and Nalagarh and 3 villages of Gurdaspur district. Kangra district derives its name from Kangra town which was called Nagarkot in the ancient times. The temple of Devi Bajreshri was one of the oldest and wealthiest in northern India. It was destroyed, together with the fort and the town, by 1905 Kangra earthquake on the 4 April 1905. Many ancient temples like the Jawalaji Temple, Brijeshwari Devi temple, Chamunda Devi temple, Baba Baroh, Masroor Temple built by pandvaas and Baijnath temple are found here. Kangra Fort is also a popular tourist attraction, so is Mcleodganj near Dharamsala, headquarters of the district, and now home-in-exile to the Dalai Lama.

The Kangra Valley Railway

Pathankot-Palampur-Jawalamukhi-Kangra-Joginder Nagar

The railway of Kangra valley is ample proof of how railway engineers can create a work in harmony with nature. This they have done without destroying the grandeur of the mountain, and at the same time, revealing to the traveler. Just before Baijnath, the line enters a stretch of country far superior to the journey by road. Here, the train threads its way among the pines of the Bhir gorge. This stretch between Baijnath and Joginder Nagar is the steepest.

Kangra Fort: The remains of the fort of the Kotch Raja's of Kangra are located on a strategic height, overlooking the Ban Ganga and Manjhi rivers. At the top of the fort there was also a place of the Kotch kings. The earthquake of 1905 in Kangra destroyed both the palace and the fort. It is now in its ruins.

Jawalamukhi:  Temple of Jawalamukhi is just 30-km from Kangra, 56-km from Dharamsala, near the Beas river and on the side of cliff, is one of Hindu dome most famous shrines. Built against the side of a rocky spur, the temple is dedicated to the manifestation of the Devi of fire also called the "Flaming Goddess".

Adventure Sports

The Kangra Valley offers exciting opportunities for trekking, rock climbing, mountaineering and fishing. The Kangra Valley is the proverbial home of various fishes such as Mahaseer as also the Malli, Soal, Bachwa, Gid and Shingra.
