Manimahesh Kailash peak that stands high close to the lake is believed to be the abode of Lord Shiva and situated in the Pir Panjal Range of the Himalayas, is a high altitude lake 4080m. The name Manimahesh signifies a jewel (Mani) on Lord Shiva's (Mahesh'es) crown. Local people claim that the moon-rays reflected from the jewel can be seen from Manimahesh Lake on clear full-moon nights. It is more likely to be the light reflected from the glacier that adorns the peak, like a serpent on Shiva's neck.Manimahesh Yatra in Himachal Pradesh is treated as a state level fair as per the declaration of the Himachal Pradesh State Government. Manimahesh is well approached from Pathankot through Chamba and Bharnaur.
Manimahesh Lake is believed to be one of the abode of Lord Shiva as per the Hindu mythologies. Manimahesh Yatra is one such pilgrimage, which starts from Lakshminarayan Temple in Chamba and ends at the Manimahesh Lake in Bundhil valley. After reaching Manimahesh Lake they take dips in the holy water With the termination of the Manimahesh Yatra.
Mani Mahesh Peak is located 35km from Bharmour and its also called Chamba Kailash. The pilgrimage to Mani Mahesh is called "Man ka Mahesh" because it provides one with spiritual satisfaction after viewing Mount Kailash and taking a holy dip in the lake. The Mani Mahesh Yatra begins on Krishna Janmashtami and concludes on Radha Ashtami every year.
